Nobility, Clergy. Archbishop of Magdeburg and Bishop of Halberstadt. Born the fifteenth child of Friedrich II and Sophia of Poland. When his cousin Archbishop Albrecht left Magdeburg in 1523, he became coadjutor bishop there. In 1541 Albrecht and the cathedral chapter named him stadtholder in Magdeburg and administrator in Halberstadt. After Albrechts death he consequently succeeded him in both cities. He resided in Halle where he restored the monasteries, which had been dissolved during the Reformation, and reintroduced catholic masses in previously closed cathedral.
