Nobility, Clergy. Born the second child of Joachim II from his second marriage to Hedwig of Poland, a daughter of the polish king Sigismund I. He succeeded his elder brother Friedrich in 1552 as Archbishop of Magdeburg and Bishop of Halberstadt. Due to his age he couldn't initially assume his duties. Instead Johann Georg von Mansfeld acted as administrator of the see until 1557. His early death prevented a serious candidacy to the Polish throne and the introduction of the Reformation in his entire archbishopric. He was the last Archbishop of Magdeburg that was confirmed by the Pope.
