Last Monday evening January 23, 1899. Howard Harlan, an old and respected citizen died. He was born in Hollensbury, Ohio, January 31st, 1818. He only lacked eight days of being 81 years old. He married to Abigail Tilson in 1838, seven children were born to them, four daughters and three sons. Mr. Harlan moved from Ohio to Iowa in 1856 and moved to Kansas in 1875; has resided in Sumner county ever since 1878. His sons and daughters were all present during his late sickness except two daughters who preceded him in death and were buried in Iowa. Mr. Harlan was a member of the Christian church seventy-three years. Rev. Broadus of Belle Plaine preached the funeral sermon at the Christian church on Wednesday at 1 o'clock after which the remains were followed to their last resting place in the Milan cemetery by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Mr. Harlan was the father of our present postmaster, Hugh Harlan.
