Civil War Union Army Officer, US Congressman. He was a printer and became publisher of the Pottsville Mining Record. Cake joined the Army at the start of the Civil War and became Colonel and Commander of the Twenty-fifth Pennsylvania Regiment, and later the Ninety-sixth. He resigned his commission in 1863 and moved to Tamaqua in Schuylkill County, where he owned a coal mining and distributing business. He was elected to the US House as a Republican in 1866 and reelected in 1868, serving from 1867 to 1871. Cake ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1870, then returned to his coal business.
