John Elliott, was one of a family of ten children. He was born September 25th, 1822, in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood and was married to Miss Susan A. Randolp Sept. 27, 1849. After a few years spent in Attica, Indiana, he moved with his family, in the early fifties, to Cedar Falls, Iowa. There he worked at his trade, that of carpenter, for a few years, coming to Dallas county, in a covered wagon, in the fall of 1856 where he experienced the trials and hardships incident to a pioneer's life and which he enjoyed, being of strong, rugged constitution. Here he resided until the death of his wife, in July 1868. In the spring of 1871 he removed, with his children, to Cass Co., Iowa, where he lived on a farm, returning to Dallas County in the Spring of '75. He located on a farm near Waukee, where he resied until about 20 years ago, when he came to Waukee, where his death occurred April 5, 1903. His age was 80 years, 6 months, and 10 days. He leaves one brother, Thomas J. Elliott, who resided in Danville, Illinois. Six children were born to him. Two having died in infancy, the four living are J. R. Thomas, and Mary of Waukee, and Mrs. Z. T. Bates of Chicago, and John of Waukee; also six grand-children, and one great grand child. He was an affectionate husband and a kind, indulgent father. It can be said of him that he was never idle and he had no use for the idler, going to his shop to the work he loved almost to the last and did not seem to think of the weight of his years. He was one of the charter members of the Waukee Presbyterian church. Beautiful traits in his life were his strict honesty, his love for his home, and his reverence for the Sabbath day. Whether he attended church or not he kept the day holty, and taught his children to do likewise, for which they hold him in greatful remembrance. It seems most fitting that he should go to his last sleep on the day he loved. He was tenderly laid to rest in Booneville cemetery, April 7th, 1903, beside the Dear Mother and wife who had proceeded him nearly 35 years, and to whose memory he had ever been faithful. He is gone but not forgotten.
