After an illness of many years Henry Martin died at his home in Scriba, April 13, 1903, aged 69 years 10 months and 6 days. Mr. Martin was born in Parish, N.Y., June 7, 1833, where he spent his boyhood days, coming to Scriba when a young man. On September 23, 1853 he was married to Mary J. Prosser who survives him. To this union were born six children, five of whom are living, as follows: Mrs. C. H. Coe of Minetto; Mr. Charles E. Martin, and Mrs. C. C. Taylor of Watertown; Mr. Clinton W, Martin and Mr. George S. Martin of Scriba. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters - Mr. George Martin of Watervliet, Mich.; Mr. Fayette Martin of Springhill, Ill.; Mrs. Emerett Burton of Wadena, Minn.; and Mrs. Letty Irish of Bemji, Minn.
Mr. Martin had a fine military record. He enlisted at Oswego, N.Y., and was mustered in as a private in Co. D, 81st Regiment New York Volunteers. He was promoted corporal in December 1862; was wounded at Cold Harbor, Va., June 3, 1864; and was mustered out Sept. 17, 1864, having served three years. Mr. Martin was a member of Porter Post No. 573 of Scriba. The Post attended the funeral in a body.
Although a great sufferer he bore his suffering patiently and was bright and cheerful until the last.
Some time previous to his death he made arrangements for his funeral which was held from the M. P. church at Lycoming of whom he was a member. He was tenderly borne by his sons to his last resting place in North Scriba cemetery.
