Clarence served as a musician in the Band of the 365th U.S. Infantry in World War One.

He enlisted on Feb 9, 1918 and was assigned to the Headquarters Company 365th U.S. Infantry as a musician. He went to Camp Grant, IL for training and his regiment went to France in June 1918 as part of the 92nd Division. They served in the front line trenches until the Armistice and returned home in Feb 1919 to Camp Lee, VA where Clarence was Honorably Discharged on March 18, 1919.

In the 1900 census of Peoria, IL Clarence is listed as 11 years old born Aug 1889 in IL residing with his mother Johana Ashford age 31 born in MO and his brother John R.B. age 4 born in IL, and his mother's sister Leana M. Lawrence age 20 born in MO.

When he died on June 15, 1939 in Chicago, IL his death certificate stated he was 50 years old born in 1889 in Peoria, IL the son of Robert Ashford and Jeanna Johnson Ashford. He was a tailor by trade and was buried at Lincoln Cemetery on June 20, 1939.

On April 7, 1941 a government headstone was shipped to Lincoln Cemetery to mark his grave as a veteran.
