OBITUARY: JOHN FRANKLIN AMES, age 86, of Tuscaloosa, died March 28, 2012, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Northport with Rev. Mark McCormick officiating and Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing.
Mr. Ames was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John Henry and Nina Mabel Ames; and his sisters, Freda Gadbery and Belva June Perry.
Survivors include his brother, Gordon Ames (Jackie) of Emporia, Kan.; daughter, Jolene Ames Stanford (Ronnie) of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; three grandchildren, Jaelee Jeanne Watanabe (Frank) of Calabasas, Calif., Melissa Jo Maltby (Ryan) of Marietta, Ga., and John Anderson Williamson of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; step-grandson, Jason Stewart Stanford of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; three great-grandsons, John "Jack" Franklin Watanabe, Anderson Prest Watanabe, and Merritt Butler Maltby; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Ames was born in Arkansas City, Kansas, in 1925. He proudly served as Torpedoman's Mate (E) Second Class in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 during World War II and participated in a Freedom Honor Flight.
The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the nursing and medical staff at DCH, especially those on north sixth floor tending to Mr. Ames with love and compassion.
