RACINE - Alex A. Barry, 82, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Lakeshore Manor.

Alex was born in Racine January 25, 1921, son of the late Frank and Rose Lavatore Barry and was a lifelong Racine resident. On November 7, 1942, in Racine, he was united in marriage to Faith M. Cheska, who preceded him in death May 26, 1988.

During World War II, Alex served in the United States Army for three years in the Southwest Pacific with the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division as a First Sergeant of its medical detachment, and received the Purple Heart.

Alex retired on February 1, 1986, after 33½ years of service with Vulcan Materials Company, Midwest Division. He served in many capacities of management with the company, including Manager of the Ready Mix Concrete Facilities in Wisconsin and General Manager of the Wisconsin District. He was promoted to Vice-President in 1969 and served in that capacity including Vice-President of Sales for the entire Midwest Division.

Alex was active in a number of professional associations including Past President of the Wisconsin Ready Mix Concrete Association, The Wisconsin Road Builders, National Crushed Stone Association, National Sand and Gravel Association, National Slag Association, and the National Ready Mix Concrete Association. Most recently, he served on the Board of Directors of Racine Rail Road Products Incorporated. He was active in Community Affairs having served on various boards including St. Luke's Hospital, Family Service of Racine, Chamber of Commerce, and Sales and Marketing Executives of Racine.

Alex was a long-standing member of Atonement Lutheran Church and served as a member of the church council including the position of Treasurer of the Council and Treasurer of the Building Committee of the new educational unit. He was also a member of the Somerset Club, former member of the Racine Country Club, past member of the Shrine Club, Belle City Lodge #92 F & AM, Orient Chapter #7, Knights Templar Commandery, and the Shrine Tripoli Temple.

He enjoyed golfing and playing Gin Rummy, but most of all, spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his son, Dennis J. (Joan) Barry of Racine; his daughter, Barbara Barry (Jeffrey G.) Fries of Racine; four grandchildren, Rebecca Faye Barry, Kevin Cheska Barry, Craig Alexander Fries, Barry Nicholas Fries; two sisters, Helen Bednar and Florence Bartz, both of Racine; sisters-in-law, Elaine Barry and Hattie Barry, both of Racine; longtime dear friend, LuElla Burgess of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Peter, Frank, Louis, Stanley, and Jack; his sisters, Anne, Christine, and Janet; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Otto and Nell Cheska; and sister-in-law, Ruth Weyland.

Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Thursday, March 20, 2003, from 4 until 7 p.m. Private Funeral services will be held followed by full Military Honors and interment at West Lawn Memorial Park.

Memorials to Atonement Lutheran Church, All Saints Dialysis Unit, or Lakeshore Manor have been suggested.
