Lifelong Alaskan, Michael Andrew Andrews, Sr., 85, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014 at the Providence Seward Medical Center in Seward.

Funeral services will be held at the Emmonak Catholic Church in Emmonak. Viewing will be held at the Andrews residence in Emmonak the day prior to the services. He will be laid to rest at the Emmonak Cemetery.

Mike was born Nov 30, 1928 to Qusjuarr and Natalia Andrews in Amirrtulik, Alaska. He completed third grade, but was well educated on the native way of living.

Mike was enlisted with the Alaska Territorial Guard. He had lived in Emmonak and had also lived in Hooper Bay, Nunam Iqua and Nunaqrraaq. Mike was unemployed, but he used the traditional way of hunting and trapping to raise his family. He was a member of the Emmonak Catholic Church.

“Mike Andrews, Sr. liked to help people with his wisdom of knowledge of advice. He was an advisor counselor who spoke from his heart. He liked to make taluyaks, ice cleaners and dance fans. Mike introduced his grandchildren to Eskimo dance as well as loved to Eskimo dance and sing. He enjoyed visitors in his own home and meeting people and teasing them. Mike taught his children and grandchildren to respect people and land,” wrote the family.

Mike was preceded in death by his sons, James and Dominic Andrews; daughters, Kathy Tucker-Hootch and Molly Andrews; sister, Antonia Olson; nieces, Henrietta and Rose Olson; and his parents. He is survived by his wife, MaryAnn Andrews of Emmonak, AK; daughters, Delores Bouchan of Stebbins, AK, Eulalia Andrews, Angie Kamkoff and Olivia Moses all of Emmonak, AK; sons, Michael Andrews, Jr. and Paul Andrews both of Emmonak, AK; daughter, Margaret Andrews-Kirk of Stebbins, AK; sons, Paul Raphael of Bethel and Jimmy Andrews; and sister, Bessie Orouke.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family C/O Mary Ann Andrews, PO Box 94, Emmonak, AK 99581. Arrangements were cared for by the Anchorage Funeral Home.
