Nelson N. Bissell. father of James N. Bissell of this place, was born in Greenfield, Mass., Aug. 9, 1805, and died in Kalamazoo Oct..29,1880. He was a descendent in one line from the Massachusetts pilgrims and was married in November 1828, after spending his boyhood in Greenfield, to Miss Aura Sage, daughter of Capt. Oliver Sage, descendant of David Sage, one of the first settlers (1839) at Middletown, Ct. In 1834 Mr. Bissell was converted and united with the M. E. church in Hovelton, N. In 1852 Mr. Bissell was married to Mrs. Lydia Hubbard, by whom he had one daughter. He lived in Bellville, N. Y., till 1869. Since that time, he has lived with his son in Kalamazoo, with the exception of a short time with Mrs. R. C. Turner at Mendon. He has always been esteemed for his kindness and benevolence, and though for the last few years his mind has been at times under a cloud, it was always clear on the subject of religion, and he was always ready to speak a word for his Lord. He leaves eight children, who are comforted in the faith of meeting him in the other life. During his illness he received every attention from Supt. Palmer and members of the medical staff, as well as from the attendants, kindnesses which have been a great satisfaction to the friends. The family of Mr. J. N. Bissell received many manifestations of sympathy from neighbors and friends at the time of the funeral which will ever be a grateful memory to them. Eastern papers please copy.
