Earl Launer, 98, of Topeka, KS and formerly of Beardstown died Weds. January 6, 2016 at Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook, KS.

He was born December 10, 1917 in Beardstown, the son of Richard and Lydia Krohe Launer.

He married Dorothy M. Krohe on Aug. 4, 1948 in Beardstown and she preceded him in death on January 14, 2008.

He is also survived by two daughters; Lynn Hutson of Trinidad, CO and Lorraine Wagner of Cheyenne, WY; four grandchildren; Matt (Monica) Hutson of Salida, CO, Caprice (Frank) Montonati of Trinidad, Co, Stephanie (Shawn) Lightfoot of Topeka, KS and Christopher (Chrissy) Hutson of Homer, AK; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Ralph, Gilbert, Harvey, Everett and Marvin Launer; and three sisters, Ruth Spoon, Ruby Hacker and Violet Reichert.

Mr. Launer was a 1935 graduate of Beardstown High School and joined the Navy during WW II where he was a mechanic and worked frequently on George H. W. Bush Sr.'s plane. Earl worked on the family farm in Arenzville for 20 years after returning from service to his country. He then took a position with the Beardstown Post Office in 1965 and eventually became Postmaster, retiring in 1986. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities and Elks Lodge #1007, both in Beardstown. He loved to golf and he and Dorothy traveled extensively throughout the U.S. bowling in different tournaments and events. Earl was proud and spoke frequently of the time he and Dorothy saw President Eisenhower when he came to Illinois in 1956. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, animals, reading the newspaper and watching most all sports. His favorite sports team being the Chicago Cubs. He was a very loyal fan all of his life. In his later retirement years, Earl enjoyed playing cards at the Elks Lodge on almost a daily basis.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery.
