Sherwood “Woody” Oxley, 75, residing in South Bend, passed away at 1:30 pm Tuesday, January 12, 2016 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. He was born October 25, 1940 in Hinsdale, IL to the late Emerald and Dorothy (Spohr) Oxley.

On August 20, 1960 in South Bend, Woody married the former Dianna L. Findley, who survives. In 1961, Woody and Dianna moved to the South Bend area from Berrien Springs, MI. Woody worked as an auto body mechanic/repairman at Pete Fall Ford in Elkhart for 25 years and then Hagen-Wimberly Ford in Dowagiac for 5 years before retiring.

In addition to his loving wife of 55 years, Woody is survived by one daughter, Sandra D. Dennin of South Bend; four sons, Randy G. (Leasa) Oxley of South Bend, Dean A. Oxley of Granger, Gene V. (Sheri) Oxley of Elk Grove, CA and Gary L. (Susan) Oxley, also of South Bend; eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister, Linda (Jerry) Teter of North Carolina; and two brothers, Ron (Viven) Oxley and Roger Oxley, both of California. Woody was preceded in death by his parents, Emerald and Dorothy Oxley; stepmother, Marian Oxley; one son, Ricky A. Oxley; and two brothers, Dick and Larry Oxley.

Woody was very involved with baseball during his lifetime. He volunteered for 30+ years in a variety of baseball-related activities including Clay Township Baseball Commissioner, the Babe Ruth Organization and American Legion Post #50. In fact, Oxley Field in Clay Park was named in his honor. Woody was also a volunteer with the Democratic Club.

Funeral services for Woody will be held at 11:00 am Monday, January 19, 2016 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Rev. Dr. Pat Somers of Evangel Heights United Methodist Church will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 - 6:00 pm Sunday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be donated to the charity of the donor’s choice.
