TUPELO - George D. Gober, 67, died of cardiac arrest January 7, 2016, at his residence in Tupelo, where he had resided the last seven years. A native of Tupelo, he was born January 1, 1949, to the late John Davis and Aileen Smitherman Gober. George grew up in Oxford and Okolona, going to undergrad school and working in his Dad's service station. After graduating in 1970 from Ole Miss, George's work took him to New Orleans and eventually led him in CPA jobs in California, Mississippi, Texas and Australia. Since moving to Tupelo, George had done contract accounting work.

George was a member of Harrisburg Church participating in FAITH, Mountain TOP and other community outreach. He had also participated in several choirs in different churches and enjoyed being a servant to outreach missions. He often wore a smile and his cross necklace to symbolize his love and belief in Christ. George would tell anyone that his greatest gift was God's grace and his Salvation through Jesus. George counted his second greatest gift as his son, Simon. George was honored to attend Simon's recent graduation from Cal Fire Engineer Academy in August. George's love for Ole Miss began when he sold programs and Cokes at the football games at age 11 and 12. George would have made more money selling Cokes at the game if he had not sat down and watched the game. He was a member of the Ole Miss Alumni Association and Touchdown Club.

A service honoring George's life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 16, 2016, at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Home with the Reverends Tim Alexander, David Langerfeld and Aaron Tomes officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Okolona.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, (Fri.), January 15, 2016, at the Tupelo Chapel, at 5281 Cliff Gookin Blvd in Tupelo.

Survivors include: son, Simon Gober of Santa Clara California (Misty Nance, girlfriend); two sisters, Vickie Gober, Saltillo and Kathy (Todd) Harris, Newfane, New York; former wife and mother of his son, Dannie, Molle, Iowa; two aunts, Maxine (Dalton) Sparks and Betty (James) Parker of Tupelo; and several cousins. George was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Mike McCraw, Bailey Minich, Horace Waugh, Lee Borden, Henry Resterick and Charlie Estes. Honorary pallbearers will be George's workout buddies at Team Fitness in CA, FAITH members and Mountain TOP participants.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harrisburg Baptist Church Building Fund at 4675 Cliff Gookin Blvd, Tupelo 38801, Mountain TOP, P O Box 128, Altamont, TN 37301; AFR or any charity of choice .
