George John William Gottsche, Jr., age 88 of rural Meriden, IA, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, January 16, 2016. ... Burial will be held at Liberty Township Cemetery rural Meriden, IA at a later date. ...

George John William Gottsche, Jr., the son of George N. Gottsche, Sr., and Mabel (Mesner) Gottsche, was born August 22, 1927, in Paullina, IA. His childhood years were spent in the Paullina and Cleghorn area where he attended schools and helped work on neighbors farms. George served in the U.S. Army where he was a lab tech in the x-ray department at a hospital in New York. Following his honorable discharge he continued his work as a farm hand. On July 31, 1948, George was united in marriage to Doris Lillian Alm at his her parent's home in Cleghorn. Where they had a beautiful cake from Kresges in Sioux City. They were married for 64 years, working together farming and raising hogs.

George enjoyed farming and taking care of his lawn. He was meticulous with his lawn and fields and was known to have no weeds except for the time The Egger boys put a full grown sunflower in a 5 gallon bucket and hauled it out into his field! George also enjoyed tinkering in his machine shed, camping, fishing, especially years ago at Leo French's pond, and playing pool at Kenny's Corner. He also loved spending time with his grand and great grandchildren playing cards with them, tending to his apple orchard, mowing lawns and in the early years building his own tractor which he entered in the Marcus tractor pull in 1966.

On January 15, 2016, George passed away unexpectedly at his home at the age of 88.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris L. Gottsche; infant son, Richard Lee Gottsche; his parents, George and Mabel Gottsche; and his sisters, Evanelle Thoms and Delores Smith.

He will lovingly be remembered by his daughters, Sue (Chuck) Lindgren of Aurelia, IA, and Marilyn Morse of Santa Maria, CA; four grandchildren: Laura Shanahan and special friend Mark Widhalm of Hinton, IA, Caren Jessup of Aurelia, IA, Mark Lindgren and special friend Jenn Hardin of Aurelia, IA, and Steve (Elysia) Howard of Santa Maria, CA; three sisters: Arlene Schlenger of Cherokee, IA, Anita Hazen of Le Mars, IA, and Shirley (LeRoy) Pedersen of Spirit Lake, IA; he is also survived by 10 great grandchildren; Bradly, Amie, Alex, Jonathan, Jana, Samantha, DeLanie, Cecelia, Natalie and Christian and many nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.
