The Rev. Willaim Koepchen, pastor for 36 years of St. Luke's Lutheran Church (308-316 West Forthy-sixth Street), and known at "the Protestant Bishop of Times Square died of a heart ailment.
He was born in Chicago, the son of Friedrich Wilhelm Koepchen and Christiane Berger, and orphaned at an early age. He lived at the Lutheran Orphanage in Addison, Illinois where he gained a lasting interest in work on behalf of orphans.
He graduated from Concordia College, Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1885 and from the seminary in St. Louis in 1888. In that year he was ordained and installed as pastor of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Haven, Connecticut. At the same time he was acting missionary at large for the New England States, where he start a number of churches.
He served at St. John Lutheran Church, Meriden, Connecticut from 1890 to 1900 and then at St. Luke Lutheran Church, New York City from 1900 to 1936. He served as a member of the Board of Control for Concordia collegiate Institute (now Concordia College), Bronxville, New York as well as a member of the Church Extension Board for the LCMS's Atlantic District.
He was survived by wife, Caroline Marie Neebe Koephen; four sons, William, Henry, Karl and Paul.
