John was baptized as Jean Baptiste Arteau in Marieville, Ontario, Canada in 1829. His parents are Jacques "James" Arteau / Carto & Margaret Robert dit Lafontaine. The family moved to the area of Champlain, Clinton Co., NY, by 1850, where they are found by the surname "Carto." John, his wife, and children moved to Chatham, Kent, Ontario, before ending up in Bay County, Michigan. Once in Michigan the entire family assumed the surname Carter and used that moving forward.
