He began his military career in 1948, joining the Idaho National Guard as a private. He then joined the United States Army in 1950, serving for two years, including service in the Korean War, as a pilot of both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. In 1952, he transferred his service to the United States Army Reserve (USAR), where he served until his retirement in 1991, having achieved the rank of Colonel. His service in the USAR included many command roles, including Armored.

While serving his country, he also had a long career involving his first love, flying. He began his career with Eastern Airlines in March of 1956, where he remained until his mandatory retirement in January of 1991. During his tenure with Eastern Airlines (EAL) he attained the rank of Captain and flew many aircraft, beginning with the DC-3, and completing his service flying the A300 Airbus.
