Youthful Army Veteran Dies In Schenectady
Schenectady -- Home for the first Christmas celebration in five years, Harold Willis Blanchard II, 23, former Oneonta resident and discharged Pacific veteran, was taken suddenly ill at 5 p.m. Tuesday and died early Wednesday morning (December 26, 1945) at a local hospital. Death was reported due to a coronary occlusion.
A military funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bond funeral home here. Rev. Raymond Kenneth, Cherry Valley Presbyterian church, will officiate. The body will be placed in the Vale cemetery vault here.
Mr. Blanchard, who lived in Oneonta with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold W. Blanchard, during 1936 and 1937, was born in Albany April 6, 1922. He graduated from Oneonta Junior High school and, moving to Cobleskill, graduated from the high school there in 1940.
On July 17, 1940, one month following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the Army, and was sent to Panama. In January, 1943, he was returned to Camp Edwards, Mass., for training and in December was sent to the Pacific area for service. He served with the anti-aircraft radar section.
He participated in the Okinawa and Philippine campaigns. Amassing 117 points after 62 months in the Army, Blanchard was returned to Fort Dix, N. J., October 4 and discharged. He returned to Cobleskill, where he had been employed at the Grand Union market for the past two months.
Survivors include his parents, one sister, Mrs. George W. Simcox, and niece; Judith, New York City; an aunt, Mrs. A.D. Black, 2 James St., Oneonta and an uncle, Edward H. Blanchard, Main St., Oneonta.
