Sara Jo Lyon Hooper died quietly and peacefully on the evening of January 24, 2016. She was born on October 15, 1935 in Hendersonville, TN to Joseph Francis and Sara Cantrell Lyon.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Charlie Lyon, sister Judy Kirk, and her husband Percy Hooper.
She is survived by her son, Ian Mansa Hooper and her daughter in love, Nina Musgrave, sister Ramona Clark, brother-in-law Ralph Clark, sister-in-law Judy Lyon, nieces Denise Derossett, Sara Jane Lyon and Sonia Travis, nephews Jeff and Hank Lyon, Michael, Rick and Terry Sanderson, and Sean Kirk, and step-children Veruschka, Dathan and Jhokton Hooper, and Tammy Betis.
In 1957, she earned her Bachelor's from Murray State University. She is a 1963 graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Sara Jo was a career educator. She taught at Mayfield High School, Mayfield, KY, and DuValle Jr. High, Louisville, KY. She went on to serve the Jefferson County Public Schools as the Multi-Cultural Education Specialist. She retired from JCPS in 1999, after 31 years of service.
After retirement, she served on the Volunteer Board and later as Development Director of United Crescent Hill Ministries.
She was a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church since 1960, where she was among the first female Deacons. She served on the Church Council, Transition Team and the Personnel Team. Sara Jo was a beloved member of the Harmony Sunday School Class.
She took great pride in being a good friend and Mother, enjoyed gardening, laughing with the girls from Adams Hall, sculpting, and painting.
Her creative, loving, compassionate spirit will be missed by those with whom she had frequent contact or just met in passing.
Visitation will be held 3-7 p m Friday at Arch L. Heady-Cralle, 2428 Frankfort Ave. and after 2 p m Saturday at church. A Celebration of Sara Jo's life will be at 3 pm Saturday at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, 2800 Frankfort Ave.
