Roy Leslie Odell, Jr. (May 10, 1935 - November 07, 2015)

Birthplace: Fort Madison, IA
Resided In: Sequim, WA
Service: November 21, 2015

Roy was born in Fort Madison, Iowa on May 10, 1935 joining Harriet, Roy Sr., and Gene with Virgil and Richard to follow. The family later moved briefly to Texas and finally to Arizona where his father found a job with Reynolds Aluminum. Roy enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing in the Arizona wilderness. He also enjoyed roller skating. After high school graduation, he and his buddy Jerry spent summers in Northern Arizona working odd jobs. They worked at the Grand Canyon and did farm work. It was during a stint on the Pendley Ranch that he met and fell in love with Joy. They married three months later and lived on the ranch for a short time.

They moved to Phoenix and settled in. Joy finished High School by correspondence and Roy went to work at the Reynolds Aluminum plant. They continued to enjoy the outdoors and listening to their favorite rising stars Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings amongst others. Gay, Colleen, and Brenda joined the family. In 1966 Roy was offered a job at a Nondestructive lab in Seattle, and the family relocated. Before too long Roy was running the lab and fishing in the Puget Sound.

Roy was offered a promotion to sales for Automation Industries, his parent company. He did well and was later became the West Coast Sales Manager. Because of all travel that cut into his family and outdoor time he decided to join Rayesco, a small rep firm. A few years later he and Joy started Norwest NDT. He loved being his own boss and working from home. He was well respected in his industry and very involved in the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT).

He and Joy had many friends. They had an annual salmon fishing tournament and many friends from around the country would join them for a week, fishing, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company.

Roy and Joy retired in 1997 and moved to Sequim. They built their dream house on Bell Hill and lived there for several years before moving to a house on Haywire Lane where we had many happy family gatherings.

Joy passed away in 2006 after a long battle with lung cancer. Roy and Joy had been married for 51 years.

Roy continued to live in Sequim. He met Ruth through a mutual friend and the two soon became inseparable. They traveled extensively, golfed and enjoyed many wonderful years together. They made many trips to Palm Springs to visit friends, and Arizona to visit relatives. Their home was a wonderful gathering spot.

Roy spent the last 8 years of his life battling a progressive neurological disease, but maintained a positive attitude throughout. As his speech deteriorated, he came up with many ways to communicate. We will associate his last days with his “thumbs up” attitude and will remember him forever. He left us on November 7th, but will remain in our hearts forever.
