J.B. Fuqua was an entrepreneur, philanthropist and leader of the Democratic Party in Georgia. He was a very successful businessman, starting in the radio industry and expanding out to many other fields, eventually building Fuqua Industries into one of the nation's largest conglomerates. He ran Carl Sanders' campaign for governor of Georgia and was instrumental in the early political career of Jimmy Carter. He will be remembered for his philanthropy, and was named one of the "Hundred Most Generous Americans" by Worth magazine in 1999. His philanthropy has benefited Duke University, The Fuqua Heart Center at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, The Fuqua Center for Late-Life Depression at Emory University and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
