In 1949, his parents entered him in the Pittsfield Parks Department Cherub Diaper Derby held at Springside Park. Bill, and a few of his soon-to-be classmates, crawled or toddled their way to the finish line while their older brothers and sisters danced.
As a youth, Ricky was a member of the Pittsfield Boy's Club of America' participating in Carom Tournaments where he was a regular winner.
Active in sports, he played in the Pittsfield Parks and Recreation's Flea and North Little Baseball League; and in the Volleyball Games and Tournaments held by the Pittsfield Playgrounds. Ricky and his best friend, Donald Boland, were the winners of the Highland School Horseshoe Tournament in the summer of 1961, the last horseshoes they would play before Don moved to California with his family.
Following graduation, he continued his career as a carpenter, having previously been employed in that capacity through his high school summers. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local 444.
Ricky's life ended tragically on an early, rainy morning in Lebanon Springs, New York. Ricky and two friends were instantly killed when the car he was riding in smashed into a cluster of trees near New Lebanon Elementary School.
He predeceased his wife of two years, the former Sheila McColgan; and his two sons.
