OBITUARY Iron River (Michigan) Reporter July 25 1930 “Former Resident Dies Of Burns: Mrs. Chester Coffin, Formerly Miss Mildred Otto, Victim of Gasoline Explosion”
Word was received here yesterday of the death of Mrs. Chester Coffin, nee Mildred Otto, only daughter of Mrs. Charles Otto of this city, on Monday at a hospital in Nokomis, Saskatchewan, Canada. Death came as a result of burns received last Friday from a gasoline explosion. According to reports received here, Mrs. Coffin wished to determine whether or not there was any gasoline in a barrel. She lit a match to enable her to see the bottom of the barrel, where a little gasoline remained. The fumes caught on fire and ignited her clothing. She was badly burned and although at once rushed to a hospital, died three days later.
Mrs. Coffin was born in Iron River June 7, 1890 and received her education at the public schools here. She left Iron River to go to Nokomis July 17, 1918 and on January 17, 1919 was married to Chester Coffin. They have lived in Nokomis since that time, Mr. Coffin being a farmer.
Burial services were held Wednesday at Nokomis. Mrs. Coffin was of the Catholic faith.
