Our beloved mother and Nana went on to be with the Lord on June 5, 2007 at the age of 95. She was born on the Bates Ranch in Sierra Valley in Plumas County. Both sides of her family were early California pioneers. Her great-grandfather owned the first saw mill in Truckee, CA. She was a proud cousin of the Civil War nurse Clara Barton. In 1983, she married Bruce Bidwell who was the grand-nephew of Chico's founder John Bidwell, thus merging two old California families.

She graduated from San Jose State College in 1932 with a teaching degree. Although she was an accomplished artist, she used her talents to teach school children for over 40 years. She fostered a love of the arts in her family as well as her students.

She was a member of the Church of the Oaks where she started and directed the prayer circle for many years. She was an avid bridge, canasta, and bunco player. In her younger years she spent a lot of time hiking in the mountains but her true love was the ocean. She moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1962 to spend the rest of her life by the ocean.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lauren Groves and Bruce Bidwell; her son, Kenneth; her sisters, Edith and Eldred and her brother Erroll. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia McCormick of Seaside; her granddaughters, Michelle (Ray) Ramsey of Marina and Leslie McCormick of Auburn; four great-grandchildren, Bella McCormick, Nicholas, Christopher, and Roman Ramsey; stepdaughter, Mary (Hew) Todd of Redding and three nieces and one nephew. Thank you to her doctors Shehab Saddy and Stephen Brabeck for their excellent care.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 8, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Oaks in Del Rey Oaks. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Oaks or The American Red Cross. Published in The Monterey Herald on July 1, 2007. [CONTRIBUTED BY "MS. CLYDE" MEMBER #46994776]
