Thomas came to Australia during the gold rushes of the 1850s. Years of adventurous gold seeking produced meagre returns so Thomas turned to farming and purchased a block of land near Charlton in Victoria. Life was a constant battle against the elements and he and his family lived in an impoverished environment. Thomas never lost his fascination with the pursuit of gold so in 1894 he ventured to Western Australia and 'struck it rich in a big way'. He purchased a stately residence in Ballarat, Victoria in 1895 and the whole family moved there.
