Walter G. Smauder rites set for today

Funeral services for Walter G. Smauder of Dallas, a retired vice president of Texas Power & Light Co., will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Chapel, 7405 W. Northwest Highway. Entombment will be in Hillcrest Garden Mausoleum.

Smauder died Monday at his North Dallas home. He was 94.

Born in Burlington Junction, Mo., Smauder earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri in 1909. He moved to the Dallas-Fort Worth area after graduation and joined Fort Worth Power & Light.

In March 1910, he joined Waco Gas & Electric Co., which later was purchased by Texas Power & Light Co.

With information of Texas Power & Light Co. in 1911, Smauder became superintendent of construction at its 60-kilowatt tower in Fort Worth. He served as superintendent of power and transmission from 1913 to 1920 and as assistant general manager from 1920 to 1923.

Before his retirement in 1965, Smauder held a variety of positions with TP&L and its sister companies. He was a vice president from 1924 to 1928 and executive consultant from 1948 to 1952. He was vice president of Commonwealth Utilities Corp. from 1928 to 1942.

He was an investor in stocks, bonds and real estate after his retirement.

He was active 50 years in the Rotary Club.

Survivors include three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
