Sarah was born in Tennessee in 1843. She moved with her family to Southern Illinois as a child, and remained there for the rest of her life.

Sarah and her husband Francis Johnson were childhood neighbors. The Henry Edwards family and Larkin Johnson families resided in Corinth Township, Williamson County, Illinois between 1850 and 1860. At age 16, she and Francis were married in Marion, IL (23 Aug 1859). To this marriage were born seven children, five who survived. Shortly after their marriage, Sarah and Francis moved to Jackson County, IL, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

There is no evidence of a middle name or middle initial for Sarah.

Among the documents available for Sarah is a death certificate showing Sarah's parents both born in Tennessee. The Henry and Jane Edwards family came to Williamson County in 1853. Sarah has three sisters buried in Dillingham Shed.
