Born in Port de Grave, Isaac Hussey was the son of Abraham Hussey and Anne Sarah Bussey. He had a twin brother Abraham.

A fisherman off the Grand Banks, Isaac lost his lower left arm in a firearms accident at sea. He was left at a Catholic mission in the Labrador and picked up by the fishing ship on it's return trip. Due to the loss, he was forced to change careers, and worked with the railroad thereafter.

He married Anne Frances Gardner, and raised six children in St. John's: Allan George, Margaret Eleanor "Nell", Frances, Effie, Dorothy, and Lillian.
