Married to Robert Burton Whitt Sr, Mabel had 7 children in 8 years (six boys and one girl - Daniel Gene (Adopted), Mary, Robert, Thomas, James, Steven Andrew, David) Her death was ruled a suicide, but two bullet wounds to head and chest by single shot rifle with two empty casings around the body suggests otherwise. Mabel was found 125 yards away from the home in the woods in the back of the house. Sister Dorothy Mae Brewer was 3 months pregnant with Mabel's husband Roberts' child at the time of death. Mabel and Dorothy were the only ones home at the time, aside from 6 of the children. According to newspaper articles, Dorothy stated she was doing dishes at the time of her sisters death. No real investigation took place but Mabel's family believed her husband killed her due to comments made by him about how he killed her later implying he meant 'by proxy and the way he treated her'. Evidence suggests Robert and/or Dorothy had probable cause due to their 'affair' and it's likely they had a part to play in her death. Dorothy and Robert were married 16 days after Mabel's death. Two years following Mabel's death Robert was arrested for the murder of acquaintance Henry Turner (Doc) Lewallen, which took place at the same residence as Mabel's death. Robert was sentenced 18-20 years in prison for his murder, but only served a portion of the sentence. Dorthy Mae had 2 more children during/after his release (unable to verify if he fathered them). He was then admitted to an Dorothea Dix insane asylum where he lived for 8 years before he died of Asphyxiation in 1967.
