Earl Cannam passed away August 1, 2006, in Eureka. Earl was born in Nevada on January 16, 1914, but was a resident of Eureka for 91 years. Earl was known to many Humboldt County natives as Junior or Juni. Earl started his career in the business world as a young boy selling The Saturday Evening Post throughout the streets of Eureka, and as young adult started Cannam’s Markets of Eureka and Scotia which continued to operate until he sold the original store located at Huntoon and I Streets in the early eighties. After approximately two years of retirement, Earl decided that retirement was not for him. He missed the daily contacts with the people of Humboldt County, so he obtained a real estate license and continued his business career until he was 86 years of age.

Earl was proud to be member of many clubs and organizations. He was especially proud to be a charter member of the Ingomar Club so that the Carson Mansion could be saved for future generations. He was also a charter member of both Baywood and Redwood Empire Golf and Country Clubs. Earl was a active member of the Eureka Rotary Club and Masonic Lodge #79. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed going to and watching the Giants games. Earl loved to reminisce about the World Series game he attended in New York City between the Giants and the Dodgers in 1951. Bobby Thomson hit the "shot heard ‘round the world" to win the series for the then N.Y. Giants.

Earl will be especially remembered by his wife, Anita; his two daughters and their husbands, Johanne and Vic Gillett of Temple, Texas, and Cathy and Larry Hensley of Eureka; his sister and husband, Vista and Wayne Cave of Apple Valley, California; his nephew and his wife, George and Heidi Petterson; and his niece and her husband, Maryclay and Dennis Grinsell all of Eureka; his niece, Cindy Hughes of Etna, California; and nephews, Rick and Jerry Cave. Also surviving Earl are his special grandchildren and great grandchildren, Douglas Hood and son Doug Hood Jr., of Tucson, Arizona, Donald Hood and son Garth Hood of Cave Creek, Arizona, Dennis Hood and sons Chase and Cole Hood of Flower Mound, Texas, and Amanda MacDonald and son Thad MacDonald of Washougal, Washington.

At Earl’s request, no service will be held. Internment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Sanders Funeral Home in Eureka.
