KERNERSVILLE - BILLIE LEE CARTNER, AGE 83, OF Kernersville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 5, 2016 at the Hinkle Hospice House in Davidson County. A native of Davie County, North Carolina, Bill was born on February 12, 1932, a son of the late Lemuel R and Mary Bowen Cartner. Although he grew up in Winston-Salem, Bill also resided in Kernersville and for the last 2 years at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living in Clemmons. He served honorably in the United States Army. Most of his career was spent in law enforcement, first with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Department and then with the United States Marshal Service. He also worked part-time at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral service and Young's Florist. Since retiring, he spent most of his time working in his yard and garden, walking, and visiting with his neighbors. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his wife, Edna Frances Mendenhall Cartner, his brother, L.G. Cartner, and his two sisters, Lemma Etta Payne and Ramona Gray Hicks and sister-in-law, Glenda Cartner of Lubbock, Texas. Surviving is his daughter, Terri L. Cartner of High Point and her partner, Nina Heard; two brothers, Rev. J. Dwight Cartner (Carol) of Lexington and Arlon Cartner of Lubbock, Texas, his sister-in-law, Mildred Cartner of Winston-Salem, and many nieces and nephews and their families. A service of celebration of Bill's life will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, February 8, 2016 at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral & Cremation Service, 213 W. Mountain Street in Kernersville. The family will greet friends prior to the service at 1:30 pm. The Reverend J. Dwight Cartner, and the Reverend Susan Sherard will be officiating. Entombment will take place following the service at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville.The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living for their loving care these past 2 years and also the staff of Hinkle Hospice House for their amazing compassion and care during his last days.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292 or Holy Trinity Prayers in the Park Fund, 607 North Greene Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
