Sr. Helene was the daughter of William Patrick Clancey Jr. (1840-1906) and Johanna Kinna (1850-1941). Her birth name was 'Elizabeth' and she was nicknamed 'Eliza'. She had a twin sister named 'Mary'.They were baptized at St. Joseph Church in Chatham on 9 January 1876. Although born in Ontario, she moved with her family to a farm in Linwood, Fraser Twp, Bay Co., Michigan in April 1879.
She was received into the Dominican Motherhouse on 4 August 1903 and made her Profession there on 4 August 1904. Sister spent a total of 37 years of her religious life at St. Clara Convent where she worked in the bakery, in the laundry, the sewing room and as a helper in the Boiler House. She also spent 1 year in Cheyenne, Wyoming and 11 years at Our Lady of Mercy Convent in Bronx, New York. She spent about 3 1/2 months at St. Dominic Villa in Dubuque.
To quote her Obit.:"Sister Mary Helene Clancy died in the 79th year of her age and the 50th year of her Religious Profession. A spirit of prayer, patience and deep gratitude permeated her life."
