Mavis Adeline Akkerman, 87, of Aberdeen, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2016, at ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen. 

Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 11, 2016, at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, Aberdeen with Reverend Timothy and Virginia “Ginny” Adams officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at the De Smet Cemetery in De Smet, SD.

Mavis Adeline (Johnson) Akkerman was born July 13, 1928, to Arend and Helen (Torgrude) Johnson in Lake Preston, SD. She attended Baker Township School near Lake Preston. 

Mavis married James Clyde Warne on September 19, 1945, at Brookings, SD. They made their home in Lake Preston until James passed away on January 16, 1952. Mavis then became employed at Kingsbury Memorial Hospital in Lake Preston until 1961, before moving to Oldham, SD, where she owned and operated the Philips 66 Gas Station. In 1967, Mavis moved to De Smet, SD, where she worked for George Krieger at the Ben Franklin Store until 1972, when she began working at the DeSmet Memorial Hospital. 

Mavis was united in marriage to Alvin George Akkerman on April 7, 1973, in De Smet. The couple resided in De Smet where Mavis became an employee of Raven Industries in 1975. In 1984, she and Alvin moved to Custer, SD in the Black Hills and worked as motel operators of The Mile High Hotel where they remained until the time of their retirement in January of 1996, when they moved to Leola, SD. Mavis and Alvin shared 42 years of marriage before he passed away in June 27, 2015. In the summer of 2006, Mavis and Alvin moved to Aberdeen, where she continued to reside until the time of her death. 

Grateful to have shared in Mavis’ life is her son, Gary L. Warne; two stepsons, Gary (Terri) Akkerman and Larry D. (Char) Akkerman; four stepdaughters, Beverly (Steven) Miedema, Bonnie (Marshall) Dennert, Becky (Richard) Wolff and Gale Anderson; two brothers: LeRoy (Luella) Johnson and Roger (Julie) Johnson; four sisters: Phyllis (Jim) Rundell, Carol (Eudale) Ringgaard, Delores Ross and Diane (Earl) Coovert, 19 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. 

Mavis was preceded in death by both husbands, James and Alvin; one daughter, Judy M. Groce; her parents, Arend and Helen; four brothers: Gordon Johnson, Donald Johnson, Robert “Bob” Johnson and Marlin Johnson; and three sisters: Virginia Clark, Arlene Stuntebeck and Beverly LaVelle, one grandson, Matthew Arens and one great granddaughter, Samantha Schmidt.
