The Gadsden Times Sunday August 8, 1993, page C2: Joel Murry Alford, 71, Gadsden, died Saturday, August 7, 1993. Funeral service at Collier-Butler Funeral Home and burial in Crestwood Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Alford lived the last 23 years in Attalla and Gadsden after retiring from a distinguished and decorated career in the United States Air Force. He survived World War II as a German prisoner of the war for 33 months in Austria and Germany after his plan was shot down over North Africa in 1942. Mr. Alford remained in close contact with other POWs and after retirement became the National Historian of POWs' STALAG XVIIB. In 1969 he retired and moved back to Gadsden. Gadsden State Community college was honored to have him teach his favorite subject, history. He was a lifetime member of VFW #2780; Dwight Masonic Lodge, Zamora Temple Shriner. He was preceded in death by his sons, Brent Stephen Alford and Robin Murry Alford. He is survived by his wife, Allene; sons, Joel Terry Alford and Marcus Richard Alford; brothers, Lem J. and James P. Alford; sisters, Helen Copeland and Alice Stewart; grandchildren and great-grandchild. Additional names listed as pallbearers, etc.
