Lightning Bolt Enters Barn, Kills Man, Youth Near Corry - Lightning struck four persons standing in the doorway of a barn one mile south of Corry yesterday, killing two and seriously injuring a third. Killed were Clayton Scouten, 43, of Corry RD 1, and Glenn Caldwell, 13, of Spartansburg RD 3. James Scouten, 19, the son of the older victim, is in serious condition at Corry Memorial Hospital. Diane Caldwell, 14, sister of the younger victim, is in fair condition at the hospital. The four were haying on the Scouten farm along with five other persons when the storm struck. The workers fled to a smaill barn nearby for shelter. Ligntning entered the barn doorway, striking the four people without touching the barn. The other five workers escaped unhurt. Clayton Scouten and Glenn Caldwell were pronounced dead at 5 pm, upon arrival at the hospital. Funeral arrangements for Glenn Caldwell, the son of Mr and Mrs James Caldwell, are incomplete. Clayton Scouten was born May 1, 1921, in Sparta Township, the son of Clair and Flossie Skiff Scouten. On Dec 31, 1943, he married Clara Belle Hutchinson. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Coast Guard, and was a farmer for many years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and two daughters, all at home; his mother, Mrs Flossie Scouten of Spartansburg; two brothers, Cleon Scouten of McKean and Richard Scouten in the US Navy at Norfolk, VA; and one sister, Mrs Joyce Donche of West Covina, CA. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs Doris Wetherbee in 1958. Friends may call at the H Richard Hays Funeral Home in Spartansburg. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Clayton Scouten - The funeral service for Clayton Scouten was conducted yesterday afternoon at the H Richard Hays Funeral Home in Spartansburg with Rev Clyde May, pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Spartansburg, officiating, assisted by Rev William Finnicum, pastor of the Concord Ridge Wesleyan Methodist Church. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Spartansburg, with the following pallbearers: Clayton Webber, Charles Mitchell, Joseph Balog, Ray Patterson, Lawrence Swanson and Oscar Vance. Graveside military services were conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Corry.
