Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Anna Abbenante. He is survived by his children Gloria Pacheco and her husband Nelson, Rosemary Coite and her husband John, Patricia Barlow and her husband Butch, Toni Abbenante and her husband Neil and Mary Beth Beretta and her husband Robert. He was the grandfather of John Coite, Melissa Coite Duarte, William Barlow, Gina Beretta, Alex Beretta and great grandfather of Storm Bonanno, Massimo Coite and Haley Duarte. He was the brother of the late Robert and Edward Abbenante.
Mr. Abbenante was a graduate of Classical High School and served in the Navy during WWII as a signalman. He was then employed by Bell Atlantic / Verizon for 39 years before retiring. He was a lifetime member of the Bristol Fire Department Engine 2, Bristol Fire Police and the Fireman's Memorial Committee. He served as secretary of the EverReady Fire Department for 23 years. He was past Captain of the Bristol Rescue. He was also a past Grand Knight and life member of the Knights of Columbus #1528 in East Providence.
His funeral services will be held Friday, February 12th, 10 AM from the George Lima Funeral Home 367 High Street with a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 AM at St. Elizabeth's Church 577 Wood Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bristol.
