Funeral Service for Donald James Schwering, 73, of rural Glidden, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at Pleasant Ridge Community Church in Glidden. Duane Bundt will officiate.

Mr. Schwering died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City following a long illness.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today, Thursday, July 30, 2009 at the Dahn and Wood-house Funeral Home in Glidden, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. The casket will be taken to the Church at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, where the body will lie in state until time of the service

Burial Interment will be in Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery at Glidden.

Pianist for the service will be Susan Moore.

Casket bearers will be Art Free, Paul Walkup, Stan Best, Ron Briedert, Tom Weber and Scott Davis. Honorary casket bearers will be Butch Weber, Chuck Best, Terry Janssen and Ray Free.

A son of John and Catherine (Schroer) Schwering, he was born April 16, 1936, at Duncombe. As a young man he attended Boarder Plains Country School and Lehigh High School, graduating in 1953.

On Aug. 6, 1955, he married Charlene Griggs at Christ the King Catholic Church in Dayton.

Mr. Schwering was a retired hog buyer for Farmland Foods, where he worked from 1974, until retiring in 1998. He had lived in the Glidden community since 1976.

He was a member of the Black Angus Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and socializing.

Mr. Schwering was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charlene; an infant son, David; three brothers: Albert, Kenneth and Leonard; a brother-in-law, David Griggs; and his parents-in-law, Pearl & Ed Griggs.
