James Burton Vann, 90, passed away May 5, 2006 at his home on Sauvie Island where he resided for the past 31 years. He was born in Portland, Oregon to John (Pappy) and Margaret (Maggie) Vann, the first of five boys.

Jim graduated from Benson Technical High School earning a scholarship in electrical engineering iin 1934. Upon graduation he entered the Merchant Marines on a tour to Manila that reached Shanghai. He was honorably discharged at the end of the tour. He married Mary Priscilla Backenstos in 1937. He took up various manual labor jobs and soon began work in the barrel industry with the American Can Company. This led Jim founding Vann Barrel Company which rendered and reconditioned steel drums. He served as CEO of that business until his retirement.

Jim served in and was a member of a number of civic organizations and clubs including; St. John’s International Rotary, the Portland Lodge of Freemasons, the Sauvie Island School Board, the Suavie Island Grange, the Sauvie Island Rural Fire Department, the Sauvie Island Community Church, the Multnomah Channel Yacht Club and Riverside Golf Course.

Jim loved boating and fishing, mooring various craft at the Garibaldi and the Multnomah Channel Yacht Club docks. Boating was a way for him to relax from business and have time with extended family and friends. He spent many weekends and vacation days at his ocean front cabin he built in 1951 at Twin Rocks near Rockaway, Oregon.

Jim’s parents, wife Mary and brothers George, Harry and Lynn preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother Lydge of Portland, wife Dona (Huson) Vann, daughters Michelle Faber and husband Don of King City, Mary Wetherell and husband Chuck of Beaverton, son James Vann and wife Gretchen of Sauvie Island, stepchildren; daughters Kathy Huson Stull and her husband James of Portland, Janene Huson od McMinnville, Stephen Huson and wife Julie of Seattle. He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Remembrances are suggested to Sauvie Island Community Church and Sauvie Island Rural Fire Department.

Funeral services will be held Skyline Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday, May 11, 2006 at 11:00 in the morning.
