Joyce Stout, age 88, of Boulder, passed away Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, at her home in Boulder.

Joyce was born Feb. 9, 1918, at Linton, N.D., to Glen and Mae Mickel. She moved to Rupert, Idaho, when she was 2 years old. She then moved to Centralia, Wash., when she was 3 years old. Later, the family moved to Milwaukee, Ore., where Joyce attended elementary and junior high school. Joyce graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School in 1934, a two-year school, then attended Franklin High School for one-half year before moving to Redmond, Ore., where she graduated from Redmond Union High School in 1936.

Joyce met and married Bert Stout in Redmond on Nov. 22, 1936.

Bert logged in Central Oregon until they moved to Oakland, Calif., in 1938. Joyce attended cosmetology school in Oakland, graduating in 1940.

In April 1943 the family moved to Boulder. They leased the Wickham Ranch in the Boulder Valley for a year. Joyce worked in the beauty shop in the Windsor Hotel and also opened her own shop in her home for several years. She worked for Montana State Training School and Hospital and Boulder River School and Hospital in many departments, finishing as a dietitian in the food service department for 18 years before retiring.

After retiring in 1978, Bert and Joyce enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona, traveling extensively. Joyce took up painting, taking art classes at the college in Yuma, Ariz.

Joyce was a member of the California Art Association, Quartzsite Rock Club, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Quartzsite, Ariz., being active in the music department.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Helen Carlson and her loving husband of 62 years.

Joyce is survived by her children, Charles (Bert) Jr. and Peggy Stout of Kalispell; James and Wanda Stout of Boulder; and Susan and Mark Olson of Boulder; eight grandchildren: Jamie VanGelder, Camla Warfle, Cindy Ernst, Eric Stout, Candice Stout, Britton Mann, Erin Fielding and Samuel Olson; 13 great- grandchildren; a brother, Weldon Mickel of Mesquite, Nev.; brother-in-law, Furman Stout of Palmdale, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
