Family lore tells that Eli got on a riverboat sometime in the 1830's and never returned. One version says his youngest child was born after he left; that would be Eli T. Curtis born in 1833. The Tennessee River forms the western boundary of Humphreys County. Whether Eli worked on a riverboat prior to his departure is unknown. Finally there is said to be a record of a Eli Curtis in Lauderdale County, Tennessee which is where his eldest son William moved prior to 1840.

NOTE: William Curtis (1813-1873) is my Great-Great-Grandfather & I have seen various documents reflecting him living in Lauderdale County, Tennessee; however I have not seen any record of Eli in Lauderdale Co. in my research

Eli is buried along Hurricane Creek in Humphreys Co some five miles south of McEwen, TN. Wife Jane is buried just north of McEwen in Hooper Cemetery (a/k/a Hatcher Cemetery). Hooper Cemetery is located in a small fenced area in a field just east of Curtis Chapel Cemetery in Humphrey's County.
