Raised in Iowa and Kansas, he moved to New York City as a young man to follow his brother, Daniel Liberty Brown. He learned shorthand and assisted with his brother's phonography school and business.

Frank first married Harriet Readshaw, in September of either 1883 or 1885, and they had two children, Montague Pierre and Anita Fedora. They were divorced. He married, second, Clara Elsie Forsbrey about 1905 and they had a son, Lyman Erwin. They were also divorced.

His death record in Brooklyn, NY states that his body was interred at Lemont, Illinois on April 12, 1929, undoubtedly in the family cemetery with his parents and siblings, but there is no marker.
