Betty Mavis (Loeffler) Fletcher, 90, Manhattan, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, after a brief illness at Homestead Assisted Living Center.


She was born Oct. 28, 1925, near Stockton, to George W. and Callie Bellows Loeffler. She graduated from Stockton High School, attended the University of Kansas where she majored in German language and linguistics and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated in 1946.

She married James Austin Fletcher on Dec. 18, 1948, in Columbus, Ohio. He preceded her in death. She worked as an applications programmer for the University of Maryland for several years and as a reporter for a weekly newspaper.

Survivors include her husband’s cousin, Anne Austin Jennings, Scottsdale Ariz.; two nieces, Sherry Denton, Salina, and Jan Converse, Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandnieces; three great- grandnieces; six great-grandnephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home and Cremation, Manhattan; burial in Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
