Middlebury, Ind., Feb. 11, 1836 and
died in Benton, Ind., Dec. 23, 1911,
aged 75 years, 10 months and 12
days. He was the youngest of the
four children of George and Electa
Hawkins. His two brothers. Andrew
J. and Joseph R., and a sister Mrs.
Electa Corns, have preceded him to
the spirit world—the last one of
whom died about fourteen years ago.
On Feb. 2, 1858, he was united in mar
riage to Rachel J. Colton. After a
union lasting fifty years the wife and
mother preceded him in death. To
this union was born seven sons and
four daughters. Four sons, Elmer E.,
Jasper, James E., and Carl S., and
two daughters, Mrs. Chas. Alwine of
North Webster and Miss Anna Haw
kins of Toledo survive his demise.
He was the last of a pioneer family
of settlers' and has both seen and
helped much in the development of
Elkhart county. To him was admin
istered the holy rite of baptism and
he was accepted to membership in
the M. E. church. He was a kind and
provident husband and father, a good
neighbor and an excellent citizen
and "leaves a large circle of acquaint
ances and friends to mourn the loss
of one who will be long remembered.
