John Edward McElrath, 38, was called home Saturday, August 14, 2004. Mr. McElrath was born in Buncombe County and worked in the hospitality industry as a hotel manager, restaurant cook, and restaurant manager. At the time of his passing he was employed at the Pisgah Inn and was a member of Reeves Chapel United Methodist Church.
John walked every day with his Lord and was loving and compassionate to all. His warm smile and gentle kindness touched the lives of countless people, both friend and stranger alike and his generous spirit will live forever. He was a beloved son and brother and a dear friend to all who knew him.
John was an avid karate student who held a third degree black belt. In addition he was an extremely talented singer and guitar player performing locally under the stage name Jony Mac.
Surviving are his foster parents, James and Ann Goss of Candler; one foster sister Kathy Ballard and her husband Terry of Asheville; and one foster brother, Steven Hendrix of Wilmington.
Per John's final wishes his organs and tissue were donated helping 28 different people to live a normal life. He was a hero not only in his life but in his passing and the message he wished to spread by registering as an organ donor was for everyone who is able to please consider becoming an organ and tissue donor as well and to give the gift of life to another. John left behind a legacy of kindness, sharing, generosity and love that made the world a better place and his memory will be treasured forever.
