He was born on Jan. 5, 1943, in Grass Valley, Calif., to Orvin Philip and Geraldine Marie (McGiffin) Fry.
He was primarily raised in Grass Valley. He graduated Nevada Union High School and then attended Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, studying gunsmithing. After graduating from O.I.T., he was recruited to work for the Atomic Energy Agency in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Philip later returned to Grass Valley to care for his ailing parents. He then worked for the Nevada County Road Department. In he late 1980s, Philip moved to Coos Bay, Ore., where he opened an antiques store. It was there that he discovered his love for music and building musical instruments. As a luthier, Philip made violins, guitars and, just recently, ukuleles. He loved teaching and playing the fiddle and loved learning from his students He was also and avid gardener and loved to hunt for rocks.
He married Sheila in Coos Bay on Dec. 9, 2000. He was a longtime member of the Oregon Old-Time Fiddlers here in Klamath Falls and also in Coos Bay, where he played in a ukulele club and at one time was a member of the rock and gem club.
Philip is survived by his wife of Klamath Falls; sons all of Grass Valley; brother of Grass Valley; sister of Central Point, Ore.; three step-children, eight grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his parents, Geraldine and Orvin P. Fry.
