Floyd was the second son of John T. Chambliss and Leila Merritt. John died in Aug 1883, four months before Floyd was born. Lelia supposedly died in 1884, but her death and burial info have not been found. Floyd and his older brother, Wade, lived with relatives in near Americus, GA, where Wade practiced as a physician.

On 27 Jul 1909 Floyd married Lucy Daniel in Columbus; they were the parents of eight children: Benjamin, Floyd Jr. (KIA, France, 1944), Jack, Marshall, Mary K., Nell, Susan and Fay.

Floyd held a number of positions in Columbus: Depot Station Master, Life Insurance Agent, Stenographer, Hotel Clerk...
