Daughter of Sarah Garland (1822-aft 1860) and unknown. Sarah later married James William Herringdine on 09 Jun 1850, who adopted Sara's three younger children: James William, Rebecca Gertrude, and John Darius on 11 Feb 1854.

Ellen's last name is often mistaken as "Pearson." She was the niece and ward of Stephen Pearson (1774-1854) of Hancock Co GA and was mentioned in his will. "I give devise and bequeath to my daughter Rebecca and to Saphronia Ellen Garland daughter of Sarah Herringdine..."

Stephen Pearson was her guardian. His second wife, Catherine Garland was Sarah Garland's sister. Ellen's father is unknown.

Last Sunday Mrs. J. C. Boyer of Hancock county died at the age of 70 years. She was well known here, being the mother of Mrs. E. N. Ennis and Mrs. E. E. Finney. The funeral services were conducted from the residence and the burial was at Zebulon cemetery.
Her death casts a gloom over the entire family, and friends extend to them heartfelt sympathy.
