When John T. Brooks was born on February 10, 1826, in Anderson County, South Carolina, his father, George W. Brooks, was 21 and his mother, Mary Milly Corr, was 23. He married Emily Brooks Williams on November 9, 1854 in the home of her father, Uriah Williams, in Chambers County, Alabama. They had three children during their marriage. He died on November 22, 1863, in Mobile, Alabama, at the age of 37, and was buried in Opelika, Alabama. In the 1880 US census John T. Brooks, father, George Brooks states he was born in South Carolina and both his parent were born in Virginia.

In 1830 US census George Brooks and family are living in Anderson County, South Carolina.

We know by the place of births of George Brooks children that the family was in Chambers County, Alabama by May 15, 1838, when twins Joseph/Joe and Henry Thomas Brooks were born.

By 1840 George Brooks and family are living in Chambers County, Alabama.

In the 1850 US Census they are still in Chambers Co., Ala. George Brooks; (Milly G. or Y. as wife age given as (47 yrs) he is listed as farmer and has 2500 ac., John T. is listed as 22 yrs., laborer, B. SC; Caroline M. 20 yrs., Polly E. 18 yrs., James A. 17 yrs. farming, Sarah A. 15 yrs., Budd 12 yrs., Buddi 12 yrs., Mary A. 7 yrs.

1860 USC Chambers Co., Ala. page 32, household # 231: John Brooks 34 B. SC; list Emily 24 Ga.; Elias E. 4 yrs. Ala; William 2 yrs. Ala.

John T and Emily Williams Brooks had three children, with two living to adulthood.

John T Brooks enrolled in Company A, 1st Regiment, Alabama Conscripts in Chambers County, Alabama on Dec. 31, 1862 by Lt. Isbell was moved to Company A, 17th Regiment in Alabama. John T. Brooks was serving in the Civil War and became ill while in Mobil, Alabama. He died during the Civil War and was buried in Mobile; after the war, his family brought his body back to Opelika, Lee County, Ala. and buried him in Shady Grove Cemetery on Highway 15, a short distance east of his father George W. Brooks burial. George W. Brooks is buried in Liberty Cemetery.
