He attended the public schools of Lafayette County and Douglas School of Lexington, Mo.
In his youth he joined the Second Baptist Church of Lexington and served as Sunday School superintendent, as a member of the board of deacons and as president of the Baptist Young Peoples Union. He married Miss Lucinda Bennett July 25 1900, in Lexington.
In 1913 the Rev. and Mrs. Holmes moved to Fresno where he was employed by the Southern Railway Company. While in this job he accepted the call to preach in 1919. The Rev. He at once began work for the church was in a rundown condition and a debt was on the building. His first move was to settle the debt and then to remodel the church. Shortly after he accomplished these tasks, a need for a larger building arose because of the growing community. It was then he established a building fund for a new church which is presently under construction.
During World War II he contributed to the war effort by working at Port of Stockton and as religious counselor for some of the servicemen at Stockton Field.
The Rev. Latimer noted that Rev. Holmes' funeral was one of the largest in Stockton with an attendance of about 700 people.
